United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip next week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to al-Qaeda. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and supportive states for backing of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week comes after President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened for the first time in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.
Following that encounter, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
Previous US Visit
The upcoming meeting is not his initial visit to the US during this period. This past fall, he made history as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.
Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
