A extensive rescue and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Operations Initiated

Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine total personnel, according to a official statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Relief to the Island

Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy said.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Shipment

Just days before, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and provisions.

Broader Political Context

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with comments from different officials emphasizing the complex nature of relations.

Reacting to certain comments, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and guarantee the security of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
