Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing undesired presents might be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done the right way.
A Charitable Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The eclectic collection could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the intention is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds donated to various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents are said to be kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
The detailed catalog has not yet been made public, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
This unique auction highlights a distinct method to manage the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
