Madeleine McCann Suspect Freed from Germany’s Prison
A prime suspect in the high-profile case of Madeleine McCann has been freed from a correctional facility in Germany, where he was completing a prison term for an separate crime.
The German national was driven out of prison by his legal representative. He remained out of sight in the vehicle, but police confirmed his exit from the detention center.
Brückner was convicted of sexually assaulting an elderly woman in the Portuguese resort in 2005 and is set to be fitted with an ankle tag following his exit.
Brückner, 48, has never been charged with any crime in relation to the McCann case. He denies any involvement.
Case Details of the Incident
Madeleine disappeared in the holiday destination of Praia da Luz in 2007. She and her siblings had been left sleeping in a holiday apartment while her mother and father, the McCanns, were dining at a nearby restaurant.
The case has become one of the most widely known open disappearance cases globally.
Probe and Evidence
Investigators in Germany have pointed to data—including mobile phone records—suggesting the suspect may have been in the vicinity when she went missing, and have consistently maintained that they think he is the perpetrator.
Yet, they have not found strong enough evidence to bring charges.
The individual, who spent many years in the Algarve, was a drifter, a petty criminal, and a convicted sex offender. He has several previous convictions, among them sexually abusing minors in 1994 and recent years.
Latest Investigative Efforts
Authorities from both police conducted a fresh operation between where the McCanns had been staying and addresses associated with Brückner in June this year, but this yielded no breakthroughs.
In 2023, the search team conducted operations near the a local water source, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz.
The man spent time in the Praia da Luz area between the early 2000s to the late 2010s and had images and recordings of himself near the reservoir.
Jurisdictional Challenges
In October last year, Brückner was acquitted of separate sex crimes by a judicial body, which were said to have occurred in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
Due to variations between legal systems, prosecutors in Germany suspect Brückner of homicide in relation to Madeleine McCann, while British police continue to classify her case as a missing persons matter.
The funding allocated for the Operation Grange has reached more than 13 million pounds since 2011. An additional £108,000 was approved from the government in spring.
