RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
