Israelis mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the morning session finished without tangible results, because of differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place feels like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the music event, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"As the night arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area reported two more victims had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south region, medics reported.
