Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined term surfaced a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these claims, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
